AUDIO BIBLE IN NKONYA LANGUAGE LAUNCHED!

For a group of people who have been compelled to use the Bible in the mother tongue of their neighbors for so long, the news of having one in their own mother tongue was simply exciting. The people of Nkonya in the Volta Region of Ghana can now hear God’s Word in their own mother tongue. To mark this eventful feat for the Nkonyas’ the audio Bible was launched in grand-style. A durbar well attended by the traditional and religious leaders of Nkonya, staff from Theovision International, the project managers of the Nkonya language transcribing and recording and representatives from the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT) , the natives of Nkonya and people from surrounding villages was organized. At intervals there was a delightful display of the rich Nkonya culture. The elderly, youthful and children all shared in this great joy.

For many of the elderly, the audio Bible in Nkonya is a timely response to one of their heartfelt desires; to hear God in their own mother tongue. Although the Nkonyas’ had the printed text of their Bible in 2010, their rather oral culture like many other Africans made it impossible for most of them to access God’s Word in their mother tongue. For this reason, the audio Bible was more than welcome.

The natives expressed their thanks profusely to God and to all who made hearing God’s Word in their mother-tongue a reality. Audio Bible listening programs are going to begin immediately so that everyone in Nkonya can have the opportunity to hear God’s Word in their own language and be transformed.
